Respiratory Treatment and Diaphragmatic Breathing

Respiratory treatment in Registered Massage Therapy focuses on improving breathing function and reducing tension in muscles involved in respiration, such as the diaphragm, intercostals, scalenes, and pectorals. Techniques may include soft tissue release, myofascial work, rib mobilizations, and posture correction to enhance lung capacity and ease breathing.

Diaphragmatic breathing, also called belly breathing, is often taught by RMTs to help patients engage the diaphragm fully, reduce stress and muscular tension, and improve oxygen intake. This approach is especially beneficial for clients with conditions like asthma, anxiety, chronic chest and neck tightness, or postural dysfunction. Treatment is personalized and may include self-care strategies to support long-term respiratory health.
